LOOKING BACK TO LOOK WITHIN
The exhibition ‘Looking back to Look within’, is based around the theme of linking the past with the present and exploring ourselves through the lens of the past. The fast moving passage of time containing within it seemingly endless changes left humans with a sense of curiousness and a desire to find a foothold for connecting us to this flow of history and our place in it-for what is present today will tomorrow be the past and what we are today defines what we will be tomorrow. The ever-present question since the dawn of humankind-who am I and why am I here-has haunted and tantalized countless generations since times immemorial and the artists who form part of this exhibition also share this desire to locate themselves within the ambit of history and unravel the essence of who they are. their contemporary artistic expression fed by their journey through the millennia.

Q: Where did you born?
Ans: I born in kalra state sargodha. I belong to a family of medical profession. My forefathers contributed a lot in medical field with the British Army. My grandfather Sheikh Ahmad Jaswal took this profession as worship. Q: Tell us about your early life in childhood. Ans: I had liking, interest and passionate in studies from my early childhood. I was very good in studies and had much passion to become a doctor but due to domestic financial issues, I could not carry out my dream to be a doctor. But that thing didn’t stop me at all. My mother who supported me in bad time of my life was an illiterate but she had more insight vision than a PhD doctor. Q: What do you think that which idea or thing develop your interest in studies after not having admission in MBBS? Ans: I want to learn more and more books, you can call me a Bibliophile. So after my inter I set myself and made mind for B.A. I didn’t want to quiet myself from studies so this thing affected my brother who bought me Admission FORM of B.A in 90 Rupees at that times. After that I started studying as a private candidate. I remembered very well that I managed house hold, my studies and school where I started teaching mathematics, incredibly. After all the hard time, my father was gratified to know my result. He said “ you have passed B.A in just 90 rupees, have become me prideful. Q: How was your experience with UNO? Ans: Thanks God, I got chance to work with UNO without any struggles. I introduced a lot of new innovations of Library Sciences. |
Q: Which hurdles did you face for higher education?
Ans: It was like a dream, coming Lahore from my home town (Sargodha), though my parents went against to my relatives after observing my passion for studies in B.A, so eventually I was allowed to get into university for Masters. Some relatives tried to influence on the decision by making the stamens that how a young girl would survive in a modern city. So, after all that consequences my father stood firmly because he wanted to see me in a prestigious status. Q: How was your time in Punjab University? Ans: PU is like my home, I still consider it as a second home for me and whenever I remember the past days at PU my heart become sad. I’m the first student from the department of Library science who got job at the same University and I felt honored by all the time what I have been bestowed. At that time I had to face many problems though my teachers encouraged me all the time. Q: You did introduced the department of Library Sciences in LUMS, how was your experience? Ans: I joined LUMS before long time ago even a very few people were familiar with it. I founded Digital Library at LUMS that’s why my work is still regarded in good words. Q: Do you have interest in Politics? Ans: I don’t, have any interest in politics. As I did my MPhil at the age of sixty-four so my only interest is only books and study |
Q: How was your childhood, was you naughty or serious-minded type?

As my son got his bachelor degree in Film and Television so he spends his most of his time on his projects but we try to spend time as much as possible for both of us. Q: In which part of life you felt yourself in pain? Ans: I felt myself in pain and sorrow when I came to know the news of my husband’s death. After that calamity in my life, I made myself strong because I had to survive in the patriarchal society with a boy of just four years. Q: how is your attitude with your team and how do you mange? Ans: I consider my members of library as a family member and I never showed bossy attitude to them. Even they share their daily life matters with me. Q: Do you like music? Ans Yes I do, most of time I use to listen Ghazals of Noor Jahan and Mehndi Hassan. Q: Do you have any unfulfilled desire? Ans: I thank God who fulfilled my needs as well as my desires. I have no desire left. Q: Any message for the young girls? Ans: I advise only one thing that girls should develop interest in studies and perform best for themselves. Azra Mansoor Senior Actress & Hunarmand Khatoon
That was a Government’s job to do but I guess they were not capable enough. My God blessed me with this idea as fresh water cannot be imagined in Sindh region but Allah made me do it. It cost total 500,000 rupees for digging 700 deeper well. This well is going to facilitate Approximately 3,000 people and with solar system almost 30 house will get electricity. |
- Where did you spend your childhood?
My real Identity is Pakistan whereas I have spent my childhood in (Bangladesh) East Pakistan. I had beautiful memories from my childhood which made sad sometimes. - How mischievous were you in your childhood?
I had all the boys like hobbies; kite flying, cycling, football and I played tip-cat (gulli-danda) the most. Whenever I go to America to see my grandchildren. They used to make their bikes ready for me. - From where did you take your education?
I did my graduation from Quetta. As father was in army so family environment was educated. - Did you easily get permission from Home for getting in media?
Not at tell. My father was very strict and I never thought of working in media line. But maybe this was in my fate. I did this job with full dedication and by the grace of All Almighty nobody dares to say anything false against me by being a media person. I think I am made for this job. - Radio is first love, are you still connected with it?
There is nothing wrong if I say Radio is my first love. My very respectable teacher Begum Khursheed Mirza was teaching us about literature and once she asked me to write something. Then I wrote a short story which she liked a lot. She started my first program “College Magazine” from Quetta radio station which became my very first radio identity. - Do you think it is justified to do a role of 60 years old mother in the age of 28?
Maybe I didn’t do justice with my that character but I never wanted to do such characters which can be the element of criticism for me. I got lead role in PTV’s drama “Uncle Urfi” but it had some scenes which I didn’t want to do so I preferred doing a character of 60 years old mother. People also love me like their mother these days which I consider is blessing for me.
- You are writer and producer as well, which one is easy task according to you?
Whenever I wrote I consider other’s pain is my pain but production is difficult task to do. Credit goes to me for introducing private production in Pakistan; “The movie Man” was the first production in which I made my first movie “Lagzish”. I faced many difficulties for the marketing of that movie. It had stars like Neelma Hassan, FarooqMazhar, MehmoodAkhtar, Badar Khalil and Imtiaz Ahmed.
- You’re also a social worker, how does it feelwhile helping others?
Since my childhood I saw my mother sharing others pain and sorrows. My father’s salary wasn’t that handsome but still somehow she managed saving some from it and helped others. She always advised me that Allah happy from those who help others.
- In the area of Sindh Chachu Fresh Water was a dream, how did oyou think of it?
That was a Government’s job to do but I guess they were not capable enough. My God blessed me with this idea as fresh water cannot be imagined in Sindh region but Allah made me do it. It cost total 500,000 rupees for digging 700 deeper well. This well is going to facilitate Approximately 3,000 people and with solar system almost 30 house will get electricity.
- You also visits Karachi Kidney center where nobody likes to go usually?
I used to go to kidney center after doing my show at Karachi Radio 107. It gives me pleasure while serving others. I always go ask doctors there that how I can help them, how can I extend my services. I fell pleasure in meeting with people there; it is firm belief that I got progress/Success in result of those patients’ prayers. - How did you came up with this idea to provide education to Karachi’s children?
It’s my childhood wish to make my Allah happy.it is blessing for me to spread education in that city which has target killings all over and other political instability issues. I’ve introduced projects like Child Health Care, Education and Lions club in the Machar colony Karachi. - How much time you give to your family?
My family is everything to me I sacrificed a lot for my family. I didn’t take big projects of PTV like “Afshaan, Uroosa and Shama” for my priority my family. - Why our dramas are at criticism?
Maybe our audience has different thought now. Our new artists are ready to do anything to become famous as earliest but they are not aware of thing that time doesn’t remain same. Maybe this is affecting our drama’s quality. But there are many good artists still working which includes Saba Qamar, Asma Abbas and Umar bin Ashraf, they work really hard. - Is there any Message you wants to give?
Pakistan needs many hardworking, honest and faithful people. Our upcoming generation is Pakistan’s identity in real meanings.
Remembering Tahira Qazi: The Principal who died for her school-children
Farrukh Nadeem
Editor : Kanch Ali
On the morning of December 16 2014, all hell broke loose and fear gripped the vicinity of ill-fated Army Public School in Peshawar, when the sounds of gunshots and bloodcurdling screams filled the air. Militants barged in and opened indiscriminate fire on unarmed, innocent children; children who had congregated at a mutual place of learning, in hopes of becoming something worthwhile in the years to come. One child who survived the mass killing miraculously, recounted the horrific experience. “Their body parts and blood were flying like small pieces of cotton in the class room. Warm blood and flesh of my friends fell on my face and other parts of my body. It was horrible.” The boy who narrated this ghastly account to us continues to live as he kept quiet whilst the carnage took place and played dead, despite being shot twice in the arm.
The purpose of the above paragraph was not to replay the condemnable incident or engulf you in immense grief; but to paint a vivid picture of the unspeakable horror that victims of the Army Public School had to go through before departing for the afterlife. In such a ghastly, inhumane atmosphere where blood, destruction, human carcasses and bullets riddled the place, the natural reaction would have been to run for your life. Tahira Qazi, the Headmistress/Principal of the Army Public School, had that opportunity. According to eye witnesses, the stern principal was safely out of harm’s reach and had vacated the premises when she turned back and to her astonished colleagues, said decisively, “I can’t go into safety leaving my children among the beasts.”
Tahira Qazi knew what she was getting herself into when she marched right back into the massacre zone. Alone, one woman heading straight back into a building where 10 year olds were still getting shot at in the head, face, chest, arms and legs. She was heading straight back into a place where the sound of raging bullets and breaking glass, coupled with painful shrieks of innocent schoolchildren were quite audible. When she returned to the eye of the storm, her motherly instincts were active and duty was foremost on her mind. Trying to shepherd the young and helplessly frightened children out of harm’s way, she was apprehended by the coward militants and shot in the head. |
Being the son of a dedicated, committed, honest and hard working schoolteacher myself, I cannot understand for the life of me, how merciless these animals were who ransacked APS. Tahira Qazi did not give up or let up on that fateful day. She could have just walked out of that massacre zone alive, instead chose to go back and save the students she had also been a mother to. Such selfless sacrifice cannot go unnoticed; it should not go unnoticed. Tahira Qazi’s story should be told and retold through documentaries, articles, tributes and speeches
|
This is but only a humble tribute from a son of the soil who still can’t come to grips with the fact that she is no longer with us and one who cannot fathom the degree of selflessness the woman demonstrated. Through all our tears, our grief, our sorrow and our pride, Tahira Qazi remains alive and well within our hearts.
Here is a small recollection of what the great woman’s last conversation with her son was like. Her son Ahmad disclosed the details as to what he spoke about to his mother on that fateful day, when he didn’t know they were having a conversation for the last time. |
According to her son "Ahmed Qazi" ‘Her vehicle came late that day, so we talked about different things. She was so happy for her students. She told me that she would have a busy day ahead. She left home for school around 8:45 am.’
At around 10:45 he heard about the attack and tried to call her. He continued: ‘I started trying her cell number but for an hour it remained busy. I tried dozens of the time but couldn’t reach her and after an hour her cell turned off. Later her personal assistant (PA) told me that she was busy talking to parents of the students. Her PA told us that she had the opportunity to leave the school.’ Indeed in Tahira Qazi we have an excellent example of how resilient, courageous and selfless Pakistani women can be. In the face of terror, one woman stood up and dared to defy extremists laced with weapons. Qazi had nothing on her; no deadly instruments to threaten the beats she stood toe to toe with on that day. Ultimately, getting shot was what she must have had in her mind but the woman did rescue valuable lives and succeeded in her mission. Tahira Qazi was just like the captain who went down with her ship after whisking away the rest of the crew to safety. |

HUNARMAND KHATOON
International Women's Day (8 March)
Women Day special (Farrukh Nadeem)
International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. International Women's Day (IWD) has been observed since in the early 1900's - a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. International Women's Day is a collective day of global celebration and a call for gender parity. No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women's network or media hub is solely responsible for International Women's Day. Many organizations declare an annual IWD theme that supports their specific agenda or cause, and some of these are adopted more widely with relevance than others. "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights," says world-renowned feminist, journalist and social and political activist Gloria Steinem. Thus International Women's Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action - whatever that looks like globally at a local level. But one thing is for sure, International Women's Day has been occurring for well over a century - and continue's to grow from strength to strength.

Mrs.Sarwat Shujat is a visionary lady with an extraordinary courage to provide Montessori education in its real spirit. She has an extensive experience in Education field in general and Montessori Teaching field in particular.
She has worked in different key positions at prestigious institutions and her mastery in managing people is par excellence.
She is not only inspiring local ladies, she has been teaching foreigners as well. This is a remarkable mile stone for a Pakistani Montessorian and very few Pakistani Montesorrians have been achieved this feat.
The pivotal point of her career started when she opened her own institution, ASMTTI, in 2004. This institution is beacon of light and ray of hope for many ladies. Her services are not only providing pure Montessori education, but her passion to provide education for underprivileged ladies is awe-inspiring. Her method of teaching has global impact and students from her institution have been teaching successfully around the globe
Her services in social sector need no introduction, as she’s one of the front line supporters against illiteracy, social injustice, racial discrimination and inequality.
She has successfully served and serving in public sector for the betterment of literacy rate. Her vast teaching and public relationship experience is beneficial for all age group people. However, her desire and passion to teach adults is a testimony of her will to change the mental faculty of adults from mediocrity to productivity.
Her idea behind her philosophy of education is very sound. Adult education always brings prosperity to nation and educated parents can provide better bringing up to their off-springs
She’s a Visionary lady and she has a heart of philanthropist. There are many points about her extensive social work .
However few striking points of her long serving career are:
Shaping lives positively Instilling learning passion in all communities Making individuals realize about their importance in the society Involving individuals and communities practically in constructive activities Changing individual from mediocre to powerful individual Grooming each person to perform confidently These are just a few qualities, out of many, which Mrs. Sarwat Shujat is striving and bringing in the individual’s life.

Justice (retd) Nasira Javid Iqbal
Born in November 1940, Justice (retd) Nasira Javid Iqbal continues to exude an aura of youthfulness. While her trim figure and smart attire do contribute to this demeanour, it is her boundless energy and ‘on the move’ attitude that is mainly responsible for her appearing as such. In fact many of us marvel at her ability to pursue purposeful activities almost around the clock. She does now complain of forgetfulness and ‘digressing on ideas’, but nonetheless carries on with aplomb.
